Dear People of Kootenay Diocese,
Greetings to you in the name of Christ as we move into the joyous celebration of the Incarnation.
On this shortest day and longest night of the year, we are aware of how much we need light in the darkness. On the winter solstice, we recognize the need and give thanks for the good darkness of God’s creation, darkness for rest and germination, for humans, plants, animals and the health of ecosystems.
But we are aware too much these days of the metaphorical darkness of greed, violence, war and the destruction of Earth. The ringing affirmation of Christmas from John’s gospel is that the Light has come into the world and the darkness has not overcome it.
I pray that your celebrations of Christmas in each of your communities will be full of jubilant music, the comfort of festive tradition, and the silent awe of candlelight in the darkness.
May your offerings of worship strengthen all who participate. I pray that even in the midst of so much fearful darkness in our world, the message of the Light we celebrate at Christmas will renew your hope, buttress you with joy, and bring you peace.
Yours in Christ,
+Lynne
