The March 3, 2025, Diocesan Council meeting covered several key topics. The agenda and February 4 minutes were approved, with ongoing discussions regarding a letter from All Saints’ and the development of an FAQ. Reports were received from the Archbishop, Executive Archdeacon, and Canon Andrew Stephens-Rennie, including news of St. Saviour’s Nelson receiving a $50,000 grant for its Sunday Community meal program from the Anglican Foundation. There was also an announcement of the appointment of The Rev. Ruth Sesink-Bott as rector of St. Andrew’s Okanagan Mission starting June 1, 2025.
The Synod Office property has attracted potential buyers, with Hope Bible Church holding the right of first refusal. The search for a new bookkeeper continues [at the time of the meeting], and a financial FAQ document is being developed for discussion at the Wardens’ and Treasurers’ meeting on March 15.
Financial discussions highlighted the need for clear reporting and the importance of reviewing historical sales of parish properties. The 'subcommittee' examining investments is working on consolidating funds and clarifying financial procedures. The meeting also addressed revisions to Canon 12 so as to align with BC legislation on cremation and interment, which will be brought to Synod after review is sought from Regions.
Reports from various committees, including Camp OAC, were received. Property matters included the New Denver worshipping community, Trail’s request to sell its rectory with the possibility of selling the church building later, and continued discussions on the Synod Office property. A special Synod timeline was introduced, outlining steps for the review of canons before September.
Ongoing business included forming a Diocesan Communication Strategy Group and reviewing completed action items which the secretaries have kept track of from each of our meetings. The meeting concluded with the Doxology.
