This morning, we learned that the Archbishop of Canterbury, The Most Rev. Justin Welby, has resigned, acknowledging his personal and institutional responsibility for the “long-maintained conspiracy of silence about John Smyth's heinous abuses.”
We are hurt by the knowledge of the pain that John Smyth’s victims endured and also by the fact that the church’s inaction may have deepened that pain.
Our hearts go to the ones here in Canada who suffered abuse and to whom this news might bring back pains and traumas, particularly the survivors of abuse in residential schools, who received an apology from Archbishop Welby when he visited Canada.
If today's events are triggering for you, do not hesitate to contact our Executive Archdeacon, The Ven. Christopher Parsons His email is exec@kootenay.info
We in the Diocese of Kootenay and the Anglican Church of Canada have committed to making the church a safe place for all, and we ask God for the wisdom and courage to accomplish this task.
Yours in Christ,
